An Adventurous Life Remembered
From his room on the palliative care unit, he thinks back on his working life in our community.
For 33 years, he was a police officer in Ottawa.
This was an occupation he loved but that also had a lot of potential for grief.
First, he patrolled the streets of the Byward Market and Somerset and Preston streets on foot.
When he started his career, he was the only officer working in the Byward Market.
Now there are at least 12 officers working in the same neighbourhood.
He next was able to use a motorcycle to patrol these areas. This allowed him to cover more territory in a shorter time but provided a very different experience.
He remembers the extreme snowfalls in the winter of 1971, the colourful characters he met and worked with, and how Ottawa changed during the years of his career.
