Till death do us part
As she sits in the palliative care unit with her husband of 60 years, she is remembering their life together.
Today, she takes things one day at a time.
But 60 years ago, she was a busy, young emergency room nurse and he was an ambulance driver.
Sometimes, he took extra ambulance shifts hoping that he would arrive at her hospital and see her.
They had a very short courtship and soon were married.
They promised, “till death do us part.”
As she looks back now, she remembers them saying those words and feeling strong, healthy, and invincible.
He liked ambulance driving but he had always wanted to be a fire fighter.
He was accepted and soon was a fireman full time.
She has been a nurse, a mother, a care giver for him and for other family members.
As she sits with him now, she is grateful for the staff.
She is also filled with wonder and gratitude for the firefighters who are a unique brotherhood and still surround them with support even though he has been retired for more than 23 years.
